PM urges all parties to accept Lina Joy decision (thanks NSTOnline!)

"The decision was based on the Constitution. It is a set of laws that we have to follow. This country has law, we uphold the Constitution, the sanctity of it, otherwise we would not succeed," he said.

I'm not about to say there was pressure on the judges like some reports, but 'constitutional', Pak Lah? Um, no. Not really. Not from this end.

I refer to bits of the first 11 Articles in the Malaysian Constitution.

Article 3

1. Islam is the religion of the Federation; but other religions may be practised in peace and harmony in any part of the Federation.

Article 11

1. Every person has the right to profess and practice his religion and, subject to Clause (4), to propagate it.

4. State law and in respect of the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan, federal law may control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam.

Which, technically, Lina Joy does not. *groan*

Article 12

3. No person shall be required to receive instruction in or take part in any ceremony or act of worship of a religion other than his own.

We have established Lina Joy considers herself Christian. We are sending her to the Islamic syariah court.

Hmm, why don't these two pieces fit? @_@

Also, Dato' Nazri Aziz from the PM's Dept. finally says something USEFUL, if maybe a little removed from this context: “What is the point of keeping a person a Muslim if they no longer believed in the faith and made that publicly known?” (Emphasis mine.)
